1. SRU Stations

* Desalination Research Station

SRU has established a multi-functional Desalination Research Station for seawater, brackish water and related areas of water treatment. The station aims to enhance the different desalination technologies, improve the energy efficiency of desalination systems, reduce the environmental impacts of desalination process and develop solutions that are economically feasible of desalination process.In addition, the station is used to estimate the optimal operational requirements for desalination process such as (energy requirements and chemical additives). It includes a primary treatment unit that contains sand, carbon filters to remove impurities, iron and manganese, as well as contains microscopic filters for microfiltration (5 microns). The plant is equipped with online instrumentation and Data Acquisition System (DAS). The DAS consists of Analog to Digital (A/D) card model NI-6323 and 13 sensors. The sensors are to measure pressure, conductivity sensors, temperature, and turbine flow meters. The sensors are distributed to monitor the feed, permeate and reject brine stream.

The module is made with polycrystalline silicon cells that give high performance together with high efficiency.The supporting structure has the main functions to support and secure fastening of photovoltaic modules and provides appropriate guidance and inclination, for maximum utilization of incident solar energy. In the design of the structure is also seeking ease of assembly and disassembly of the panels and take into account the implementation of maintenance work and / or replacing them.


* Smart Greenhouse Station (Automated Indoor Hydroponics and Aeroponics Greenhouse)

New smart hydroponic and aeroponics greenhouse system using IoT (Internet of Things) devices has been designed and implemented in the Strategic Research Unit. The system is supported to measure and control the influencing factors inside the Hydroponic and Aeroponics greenhouses. IoT devices are comprised of three main components; a mobile application, service web platform and IoT devices with sensors. The greenhouse is linked to a cooling and heating cycle and different tools to control the weather conditions inside the greenhouse according to the plant type and season. The indoor environment is equipped with a set of sensors to measure different parameters such as: temperature; humidity, luminance intensity, and Total Dissolved Solids. These sensors are connected to a data acquisition system. Pesticides are also sprayed inside the greenhouse using the pesticide spraying tank. The station evaluates the environmental and technical impacts of the developed system on improving water and energy use efficiency and productivity, reducing the workforce, and reducing the fertilizers and pesticides usage.

2. SRU Devices and Instruments


* Waterproof Multifunction Meter CX – 401 for Field and Laboratory Use.

CX-401 measures pH, redox potential (mV), conductivity, salinity, TDS, resistivity, oxygen in the air in % and oxygen dissolved in water in % of saturation or mg/l, atmospheric pressure and temperature.


* Trimble Juno 3B Handheld GPS

SRU has GPS Trimble Juno 3B which provide trusted data collection. It includes an integrated GPS, digital camera, and optional cellular connectivity. Juno handheld offers the Windows Embedded Handheld operating system which is more intuitive and easier to navigate. It provides standard wireless capabilities include built-in Bluetooth, giving you cable-free connections to peripherals such as RFID readers and barcode scanners, and enables you to exchange data wirelessly.

* ArcGIS Geographic Information System

SRU has 4 licenses of (ArcGIS) geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and geographic information. It is used for creating and using maps, compiling geographic data, analyzing mapped information, sharing and discovering geographic information, using maps and geographic information in a range of applications, and managing geographic information in a database.


* ArcGIS Extensions

SRU has a number of extensions that can be added to ArcGIS for Desktop that provided functionality, including 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Network Analyst, and Geo-statistical Analyst.
